PUBLISHING PATHS

A publishing path that fits the book you’re building.

A book is something
you hold.

How you publish affects your investment, printing options, responsibilities, and how readers can buy your book. We help you understand those differences and choose an approach suited to your current plans.

Different routes. An informed beginning.

Build Toward What Matters

Start with your book. Plan for your readers.

Before choosing a publishing or printing model, consider what you’re making, who it is for, and how you expect to sell or share it. We help you turn those answers into practical decisions.

The right route begins with answering the right questions.

Your Sales & Delivery

Think about where the copies will go.

03

Online orders, events, programs, and direct sales can call for different printing approaches. We help you consider quantities, storage, fulfillment, and retail availability before choosing a route.

COMPARE YOUR OPTIONS

Three paths. Different possibilities.

Each publishing model carries a different balance of investment, control, distribution, and responsibility. Here is how those differences may affect your book.

Understand the tradeoffs before you choose.

01

Print-on-Demand (P.O.D.)

A flexible beginning

Publish under your own name or imprint, with copies printed as readers order them. We help prepare your book and set up your publishing accounts, allowing you to release a print edition without purchasing inventory in advance.

Best suited for:

Authors beginning with online sales, testing demand, or seeking an approach with fewer storage and fulfillment responsibilities.

Time to Market:

Approximately 1–3 months, depending on manuscript readiness and the services required. Editing, design, file preparation, proof approval, and publication setup affect the schedule.

02

P.O.D. + Print Run

More printing possibilities, on your terms

Produce a quantity of books with materials, finishes, and manufacturing options suited to your project. Printing multiple copies at once may reduce the printing cost per book, while requiring an upfront investment and plans for inventory, storage, and delivery.

Best suited for:

Authors and organizations with an established audience, scheduled events, speaking engagements, bulk orders, or another clear reason to hold inventory.

Time to Market:

Approximately 3–9 months, depending on book preparation, materials, and printer availability. Proofing, manufacturing, specialty finishing, freight, and delivery affect the schedule.

03

Traditional Publishing

Not recommended

Traditional publishing involves securing an agreement with a publisher, often through a literary agent. The publisher, not the author, will often take the majority of the profit, and will typically control the intellectual property of the author’s work.

Best suited for:

Established authors with significant platforms. Specifically, popular figures with leverage to negotiate favorable terms with large publishing houses.

Time to Market:

Approximately 18-36 months, timing depends on finding representation or a publisher, securing an agreement, and the publisher’s production and release schedule.

Retail availability does not guarantee bookstore stocking. Timelines, costs, earnings, rights, and distribution terms vary by title, platform, sales channel, and contract.

A professionally produced print-on-demand edition can make your book available while you learn how readers respond and which sales channels develop.

If demand supports a print run, the two methods can work together: print-on-demand for routine online orders, and inventory for events, programs, direct sales, or bulk requests.

We help you evaluate your options using the quantities, costs, and production methods relevant to your book.

Let demand guide your direction.

01

Create

Thoughtfully design and prepare your book, considering the requirements of its intended print and digital editions.

02

Publish

Make your book available through the sales channels selected for its first release.

03

Learn

Observe reader response, sales patterns, and requests that may point toward additional opportunities.

04

Expand

Consider new formats, sales channels, or a print run when the opportunity supports the investment.

A lower printing cost per copy does not automatically mean a better return. Freight, storage, retailer discounts, fulfillment, and unsold inventory all affect the final numbers.
